A UK portfolio spreadsheet fails on three specifics: pence, wrappers and dollars. This free Google Sheets template handles all three — live prices via GOOGLEFINANCE with the GBX pence trap converted per holding, separate ISA/SIPP/GIA tabs so the tax boundary stays visible, USD holdings converted at a live FX rate — plus a dashboard with allocation and a concentration check. No email required.
Why UK templates break — and what this one does differently
Most portfolio templates are American, and it shows the moment you add a London-listed share. UK stocks quote in pence (GBX): paste the price in raw and your £2,000 position reads as £200,000. Add a US holding and you’ve mixed dollars into pound totals. And no generic template knows that an ISA, a SIPP and a general account are different tax universes that shouldn’t blend into one number. This template was built from those three failures backwards.
| UK-specific problem | What generic templates do | What this one does |
|---|---|---|
| GBX pence quotes | Read 4,512 GBX as £4,512 | Per-holding quote-currency column converts GBX→GBP automatically |
| USD holdings | Mix currencies silently | Live USD/GBP rate cell converts every dollar position into pounds |
| Wrappers | One undifferentiated list | ISA / SIPP / GIA structure — totals per wrapper and combined, tax boundary visible |
| Concentration | Nothing | Dashboard flags your largest position and top-3 weight |

What’s inside
- Holdings with live prices — GOOGLEFINANCE per row, with a quote-currency column (GBP / GBX / USD) so pence and dollars both land in pounds correctly.
- A dashboard that answers the risk questions — allocation by wrapper and by holding, largest-position and top-3 concentration checks, total in pounds.
- A transactions ledger — buys, sells and dividends logged once, feeding the holdings maths; the evidence-trail habit that makes tax season a lookup, not a reconstruction.
How it fits your workflow
The spreadsheet is the middle of a system, not the whole system. The data comes from your broker exports — exact clicks per platform in our UK broker export cheat-sheet. The cadence comes from our free monthly review checklist (20 minutes, once a month). And the tax questions the sheet deliberately doesn’t compute have their own tools: the CGT calculator for disposals with HMRC’s matching rules, and the ISA vs GIA calculator for what the wrapper itself is worth. The full architecture lives in our guide to tracking your investment portfolio.
About this resource
- Live prices require Google Sheets (GOOGLEFINANCE); after copying, prices populate within seconds. The Excel version carries the same structure with manual prices.
- GOOGLEFINANCE data is delayed and provided by Google — treat it as tracking context, not dealing prices. The template records and computes structure; it does not calculate tax (see the CGT calculator) and does not constitute investment advice. Capital at risk.
Usually the GBX pence trap: London-listed shares quote in pence, so a raw GOOGLEFINANCE price overstates a UK position 100×. This template carries a quote-currency column per holding and converts GBX→GBP (and USD→GBP at a live rate) before anything is totalled.
No — by design. It records transactions and tracks positions; CGT needs HMRC’s matching rules (same-day, 30-day, Section 104), which is a job for our free CGT calculator. The ledger here is exactly the input that calculation needs.
The structure does — tabs, ledger, dashboard and formulas. Live prices don’t: GOOGLEFINANCE is a Google Sheets function, so the Excel version needs prices entered manually. The recommended path is the Sheets copy.
Yes — that’s the point. The template keeps wrappers as separate views feeding one dashboard, so you see the combined picture without losing the tax boundary that matters in April.
Yes — the button makes your own private Google Sheets copy (or grab the Excel file). No email, no sign-up, nothing shared back with us.
